Acl repair dogs

What are the options for canine ACL repair? Can a dog live with a torn ACL? How much does ACL surgery cost for dogs? What to expect after dog ACL surgery?


The exact cost will depend on the area you live, the skill and experience of the veterinarian, as well as the hospital in which the surgery is performed. In the United States the TPLO is by far the most commonly performed ACL repair technique.

It is the gold standard that all other techniques are compared to. The doctors at Colorado Canine Orthopedics have preformed many thousands of ACL repairs including, Under and Over, Over the Top, Fishing Line, Fibular Head Transposition, TTA, Tightrope and TPLO. Once a licensed veterinarian diagnoses your dog with a CCL tear and it is decided that surgery is the best option for your dog , there are three main orthopedic procedures to repair an ACL tear: 1. Dog ACL Surgical Options. A lateral suture technique (aka extracapsular repair ), 2. Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO), and 3. Here are of the most common surgeries to repair a torn ACL in dogs: Lateral Suture – Lateral Suture , also called Extracapsular (outside the joint) repair of the cruciate ligament is probably the oldest and the most commonly performed procedure performed to correct this injury.


Lateral Suture Technique or Extracapsular Repair : This method has been performed on dogs for the longest period of time, it is the most common ACL surgery , and is generally considered to be the traditional approach.

This surgery intends to restore stability to the hind joint by placing sutures outside of the joint. Until the last decade or so, it was the only way to repair an ACL tear in dogs. It can be performed on all sizes and ages of dogs. It is performed by replacing the torn ligament with a false ligament on the outside of the joint. I find most dogs thirty pounds or over require surgery.


Disclaimer: If the ACL is completely torn, even tiny dogs most likely need surgery, particularly if they’re active. Factors to consider and discuss with your dog’s surgeon when choosing the best technique to repair the torn CCL are: Age Weight Size Lifestyle and activity level Surgeon’s preference Cost of the procedure Post-operative care and rehabilitation Degree of joint disease Access to a board-certified. Seek a board certified orthopedic surgeon and discuss the best option(s) for your dog. Based on his size and our surgeon’s recommendation, our dog had a lateral suture repair on both legs.


Since there are so many types of ACL surgeries, it’s hard to pinpoint a specific range. Refer to our table below to see which each procedure may cost. Your dog will need to rest and recover over the next several weeks.


The first two weeks after surgery are the most crucial for proper healing. And you will need to supervise your pet full-time during the first two weeks. In fact, the surgeon who performed the repair on my dog says that more than half of his patients have this injury.

Utilize therapeutics. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are sometimes helpful to heal the torn. Try rehabilitation therapy. Rehabilitation therapy by a trained practitioner may speed the healing of the ACL. It attaches to the dog’s collar or harness so it stays in place.


Immediately after dog ACL surgery, we walked Hobbes to the car and used it for at least weeks post surgery. We wish we adjusted it and practiced with Hobbes walking in it before surgery. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a very important ligament in the knee.
