Equality and diversity in the public services

It explores the factors encouraging ‘good practice’ in sexual orientation equality work. It considers progress within the public services that have ‘pioneered’ sexual orientation equalities work, drawing on the views of LGB employees, management and trade union stakeholders. What is equality diversity?

Why do we need equality? The equality duty covers the nine protected characteristics: age, disability , gender reassignment , pregnancy and maternity , race , religion or belief , sex and sexual orientation. Public authorities also need to have due regard to the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination against someone because of their marriage or civil partnership status.

To meet these standards, services have specific methods and procedures that are usually stated in service policy to deal with particular issues that can be: discrimination , diversity , harassment, bullying and equal opportunities within the workforce. The Equality Delivery System (EDS2) is the framework used by the NHS to make sure all NHS organisations consider equality and diversity both in the services that they provide or buy, as well as in the workplace within which staff work. George Frederickson notes that the relationship between social equity and new public administration is social equity promotes equality in government and government services by making government more responsible to the citizenry for policy decisions, including the well-being of minorities in our society. Because how they act affects Public Services in many ways and one of them is equality and diversity. For community to be working in beneficial way to services it has to consist of citizens with good qualities and attitude of caring people about their society and development of communities.


In recognition of the opportunity to effect real and sustained changed across the sector, government owned corporations, statutory authorities, public service offices and government entities have also been invited to opt in to diversity targets. We had fantastic panel members that came to speak to our students and to answer their questions on the day.
