Motor commutator repair

When a commutator comes in for a repair , units are disassembled and rebuilt with new copper and mica segments using the same quality assurance processes applied to new commutators. Our engineers conduct failure analysis and then disassemble the unit inspecting each component. One of the most frustrating problems encountered by pre-war train operators, specific to motor repair , is an exploded commutator.

The problem arises when the fiber washer holding the commutator assembly together fails due to age. The sudden fragmentation of the three segments can create quite a spectacular motor failure. Turning and undercutting of electric motor commutators are performed for various reasons, but most notably for preventative maintenance.

For example: these services promote the uniform wear of motor or generator carbon brushes, which will extend the brush life. When we refurbish or repair a DC machine, the commutator will be skimmed and undercut to return it to its original condition ready to lay down a new film or patina in service. We fit new brushes, which are carefully bed-in with new tension springs if needed or required.

Do not over-lubricate. What is the purpose of the commutator in a motor? Steer clear of anyone using Chinese comms, the mica thicknesses vary too much. A good motor shop should be able to perform the replacement.

Basically, it involves cutting the bars from the risers, pushing the old comm off, new comm on, and rebrazing. Complete Bild-a-Loco standard gauge motor assembly for Lionel 3and 3Engine SL-13R MTH BAL Motor Armature with Gear.

Step 2: To check carbon brushes with a continuity tester, remove the motor lead wires from the circuit. Step 3: Replace worn carbon brushes and. Remove motor housing by loosening and removing housing screws, exposing field coil and commutator. Inspect commutator surface for dirt, oil, metal dust and indications of pitting or burning.

Clean and polish commutator using a fine grade of sandpaper held against the surface of the commutator as the commutator is rotated. A uniform and light surface skin or patina formation on the commutator indicates that the machine and brushes are working well. These can be caused by many conditions including overloading, contamination, vibration, incorrect brushes, brushgear settings or commutator brush surface diameter.

SEI) supplies new and refilled commutators, delivers a complete range of commutator services, and provides an extensive selection of replacement parts. Commutators consist of a steel core and a set of copper segments, insulated from each, in most cases, by mica insulating material. Clean the commutator using a toothbrush and contact cleaner.

Spray the contact cleaner on the commutator , then agitate the surface with the toothbrush. This will remove any oils, dust, dirt, or any other contaminant which can cause connection issues and prevent any contaminants from traveling when we clean up the copper surface in the next step. Some DC motors have a tool that is made for them to repair the commutator. If you can the tool it will mount on the motor and you spin the motor and use the tool to cut the commutator.

Or the is the old hand way. Remove one set of brushes and hold a cutting tool braced against the motor at one point with the cutting end against the commutator.

DC Brush Copper Drag. Flashover is a short circuit between the brushes of a motor. The short circuit is caused by a buildup of dirt, copper particles, and debris between commutator segments. I had an old starter motor come in with a loose pair of commutator bars some time ago. I glued them in place with some epoxy.
